Netflix’s The Beautiful Game is a movie about a real tournament known as The Homeless World Cup, which gives opportunities to those in need. Just like the real sports event, soccer athletes play multiple games and have to try to make it to the finals.
Former soccer star Vinny (played by Michael Ward) is very confident that he has everything Coach Mal (Bill Nighy) wants in a player; yet, Vinny could never truly make it when he was a young teenager. Ward really sells his role due to how he expresses Vinny’s emotions like in the scene where he had to cry when Vinny thinks about his past. Bill Nighy did an amazing job as Coach Mal. For example, he gives Vinny advice and lets him know everyone on the team has a reason for being here.
As a soccer player, I can relate to the theme of getting another chance to prove yourself. Everyone deserves another chance to show that you are worthy of an opportunity, such as when Vinny needed a second chance to show what kind of soccer player he really is.
