With her blonde hair flowing and wind in her face, Ms. Shawn Stobaugh rides her motorcycle with the view of old buildings and the mountains of Breckenridge, Colorado, all around her.
Some surprising facts about Ms. Stobaugh is that she grew up on a dairy farm and rode motorcycles from a young age.
“My parents rode motorcycles across the country every summer and even rode to Canada one year!” Ms. Stobaugh said. “I also played college basketball for four years at Harding University and really enjoyed being a part of a team and having the opportunity to make lifelong friends.”
When a Reading Interventionist position came open here, Ms. Stobaugh embraced the opportunity for change. Previously, she taught early elementary school and was a Dyslexia Specialist and then an Instructional Specialist.
“This is the first time I’ve ever worked at a middle school,” Ms. Stobaugh said. “The students are very independent!”
Teaching small-group reading and watching how much they show growth by the end of the year inspired Mrs. Stobaugh to become a reading interventionist.
“I enjoy helping the students grow and improve in their reading skills so they will be more successful in what they choose to do later,” Ms. Stobaugh said.
Originally from Bee Branch Arkansas, Ms. Stobaugh’s favorite memory was teaching first grade.
“I was so amazed at how much they learned over the year!” Ms. Stobaugh said.
In the 31 years teaching, Mrs. Stobaugh’s biggest challenge has been getting to know the student body.
“It’s difficult when you only have small groups each period,” Ms. Stobaugh said.
Outside of school, Ms. Stobaugh enjoys traveling and visiting with friends.
“I love getting away and seeing new places,” Ms. Stobaugh said.
