To raise money for the Susan G. Komen Foundation, the Raiderettes and their sponsor Mrs. Holland hosted a bake sale after school, sold pink ribbon temporary tattoos, and in between cheering at games, sold 50/50 tickets in October. The winner of the 50/50 fundraiser even donated the winnings back to the cause! The Raiderettes’ efforts brought in over $500, which was higher than their original goal. The Raiderettes also Painted the Park Pink at UAFS by performing a dance prior to the race and cheering on walkers along side the NHS drumline.

Yami Rivera, 8th, liked helping the women who fight cancer.

“I am lucky that no one in my family has had breast cancer,” Yami said. “I can only imagine what it is like to have someone in your family suffer.”

Lorena Martinez, 9th, has a personal connection to the cause.

“A family member recently passed away because of cancer, and the support of everyone helping with donations was an amazing feeling,” Lorena said.

At the Pink Out football game against Greenwood, the ladies performed a routine choreographed by former Raiderette Latavia Rollinson. Current freshman Destini Hernandez loved forming the pink ribbon symbol with the poms at the end.

“The biggest challenge of the dance was getting the lines straight and having sharp arms because it was a lot of hard work, but it was worth it since it looked good and was fun to perform,” Destini said.

Eimi Gonzalez, 9th, felt nervous about the dance.

“My biggest challenge was my turn because I was so worried that I was going to fall,” Eimi said.

Angela Martinez, 8th, also had hesitation.

“If I did something wrong and people saw me, I did not want people to think that I wasn’t trying or caring about the performance,” Angela said.

Sabrhea Delp, 9th, loved the crowd support.

“My favorite moment was when I saw so many people supporting the cause and cheering for us after we performed the dance,” Sabrhea said.

Mrs. Holland is proud of her girls’ effort in raising money for the cause.

“When the we first talked about setting a donation goal, Brittney said it should be $500, and I thought there was no way we could do it, so we lowered our goal to $250, but low and behold thanks to the generous donations of the young scholars here at Kimmons, we were were able to raise and double our goal,” Mrs. Holland said.

I also loved this dance because I get to bring back one of my first dance team members to help with my current team. It makes me happy to see former members come back and carry on a great tradition. Makes my heart happy!
