Being the new kid is stressful, especially if you do not speak English. You’re the only one who doesn’t know where to go, doesn’t know anyone, and in the classroom, doesn’t understand the teachers. You eventually get sad and lonely because you see other kids with their friends.
For me [Roman], it was very difficult because when I arrived in the U.S., my parents put me in school, but I didn’t know English. I would’ve loved making new friends at that time, but the other kids didn’t know my language [Spanish]. It was scary because everyone knows how to act and behave, but I didn’t understand the rules.
Making a great first impression is always good, so you can fit in with everyone at your school. In some cases, if you get to learn about your school you may be able to understand some of the rules.
